Caleb's Hope is named after an amazing 4 year old president and founder Holly Dignard met in August 2007 while working at Happy Life Children's Orphanage in a rural town of Kenya called Roysambu. Despite all the hardship, he shone as a bright little boy full of love, intelligence, and hope that made a lasting impression. In the fall of 2007 he turned 5 and got the best birthday gift any child could hope for: being adopted and finally having a family.
The creation of Caleb’s Hope has been a long-awaited dream for Holly. She was tired of working for organizations that were great in theory, but just weren’t delivering due to ego, bureaucracy and politics. The purpose of Caleb’s Hope is not only to raise awareness but to get people from all walks of life involved and engaged in the world around them. We’re all citizens of this planet. We’ve done a lot of taking and it’s time to give back.
Caleb's Hope is a humanitarian organization with projects in Kenya and Uganda with hopes to grow throughout East Africa and eventually worldwide. Our emphasis is women and child welfare, protection, and empowerment.
NYARA PROJECT:
It's a simple concept and very effective: NYARA Project involves vulnerable women and girls that have been affected by the 23-year long war with the rebel LRA (Lord's Resistance Army) in Northern Uganda. Nyara means "my daughter" in the native Acholi language. They are ex-child soldiers and child mothers that have been repeatedly raped in rebel and refugee camps, HIV/AIDS widows, and heads of sibling families where parents have died due to war and AIDS. They are all refugees in their own country, they all have children, and they all need help urgently. NYARA Project gives these women training, a job, a sustainable income with fair wages, empowerment, a means to take care of their children, afford school fees, proper nutrition, and the opportunity to be contributing and respected members of their community. The project is simple: paper bead jewellery. The women are not only paid as proper employees by Caleb's Hope to make jewellery, but also receive small-business, self-help and money management and savings training. Profit generated from the sales of beads goes directly back into the project and village bank. We also work with the girls and the children via an art therapy program. Art is a powerful medium - hence Art4Gulu. For more information visit www.youtube.com/calebshope
